The department has hosted an annual pedagogy lecture since 2001. This lecture series brings linguists from around the world to the department to share their insights into excellence and innovation in teaching, mentoring, and outreach.
This year’s lecture was presented by Ann Bunger, Senior Lecturer, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Graduate Instructor Coordinator in the Department of Linguistics at Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Bunger is active in the field of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), including the LSA’s Special Interest Group on Scholarly Teaching and her role as Associate Editor of the Teaching Linguistics section of Language. She has received National Science Foundation funding to organize workshops and conferences on scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning in Linguistics.
In her pedagogy lecture to the department, Dr. Bunger drew on her research in first language acquisition as a way of framing her understanding of how all learning works, in children and in adults, and the implications of that understanding of learning for successful teaching and mentoring. She shared her experiences in mentoring graduate student, undergraduate student, and faculty instructors by creating learning communities that are focused on student-centered teaching with instructors as co-learners. She concluded her lecture by sharing new and emerging resources on scholarly teaching and SoTL at the LSA.
